1. Indications Pr VOLTAREN® (diclofenac sodium suppositories) is indicated for: • The symptomatic treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis, including degenerative joint disease of the hip. Throughout this document, the term Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug (NSAID) refers to both non- selective NSAIDs and selective COX-2 inhibitor NSAIDs, unless otherwise indicated. VOLTAREN, particularly at higher doses, is associated with an increased risk of serious cardiovascular related adverse events that is comparable to COX-2 inhibitors. For patients with pre-existing risk factors for cardiovascular disease (including ischemic heart disease, cerebrovascular disease and/or congestive heart failure NYHA II-IV) other management strategies that do not include NSAIDs, particularly COX-2 inhibitors and diclofenac, should be considered first (see 2 Contraindications and 7 Warnings and Precautions). For patients with increased risk of developing GI adverse events other management strategies that do not include NSAIDs should be considered first (see 2 Contraindications and 7 Warnings and Precautions).
