1. Indications GLUCOPHAGE® (metformin HCl) is indicated for: • the improvement of glycemic control in adult patients with responsive, stable, mild, non- ketosis prone, type 2 diabetes mellitus as an adjunct to proper dietary management, exercise, and weight reduction, or when insulin therapy is not appropriate. • use as monotherapy or in combination with other antidiabetic agents. 1.1. Pediatrics (< 18 years of age): No data are available to Health Canada; therefore, Health Canada has not authorized an indication for pediatric use (see 7. Warnings and Precautions, 7.1.3. Special Populations, Pediatrics). 1.2. Geriatrics (≥ 65 years of age): Controlled clinical studies of GLUCOPHAGE did not include sufficient numbers of elderly patients to determine whether they respond differently from younger patients. GLUCOPHAGE is substantially excreted by the kidney and because the risk of serious adverse reactions to the drug is greater in patients with impaired renal function, GLUCOPHAGE should only be used in patients with normal renal function (see 2.
