1 INDICATIONS MEFLOQUINE (mefloquine tablets) is indicated for: • Prophylaxis: Prophylaxis of P. falciparum and P. vivax malaria infections, including prophylaxis of chloroquine-resistant strains of P. falciparum. • Treatment of Acute Malaria Infections: Treatment of mild to moderate acute malaria caused by mefloquine-susceptible strains of P. falciparum (both chloroquine- susceptible and resistant strains) or by P. vivax. 1.1 Pediatrics Pediatrics (< 18 years of age): Based on the data submitted and reviewed by Health Canada, the safety and efficacy of mefloquine tablets in pediatric patients has been established. Therefore, Health Canada has authorized an indication for pediatric use. See 7.1.3 Pediatrics. Experience with mefloquine in infants less than 3 months old or weighing less than 5 kg is limited. 1.2 Geriatrics Geriatrics (≥ 65 years of age): Evidence from clinical studies and experience is limited in this age group. The CBCRP considers funding requests for drugs (both oral therapies and injectable drugs) for the treatment of cancer in patients who have a rare clinical circumstance that is immediately life-threatening (death is likely within a matter of months) and who require treatment with an unfunded drug, because there is no other satisfactory and funded treatment.
