What the Health Canada label says it is for
INDICATIONS AND CLINICAL USE Adults TEVA-CODEINE is indicated for the symptomatic treatment of mild to moderate pain of various causes and the control of exhausting, nonproductive cough which does not respond to non-opioid antitussives. TEVA-CODEINE is not indicated as an as-needed (prn) analgesic. Geriatrics (> 65 years of age) In general, dose selection for an elderly patient should be cautious, usually starting at the low end of the dosing range, reflecting the greater frequency of decreased hepatic, renal, or cardiac function, concomitant disease or other drug therapy (see ACTION AND CLINICAL PHARMACOLOGY, Special Populations and Conditions, Geriatrics). Pediatrics (< 18 years of age) The safety and efficacy of TEVA-CODEINE has not been studied in the pediatric population. The use of TEVA-CODEINE is not recommended in patients between 12 and 18 years of age, and is contraindicated in those under 12. Contraindicated in < 12 years of age for any use: Regardless of the clinical setting, the use of codeine is contraindicated in patients below the age of 12 years because of the risk of opioid toxicity due to the variable and unpredictable metabolism of codeine to morphine (see … https://pdf.hres.ca/dpd_pm/00053875.PDF PM date: November 5, 2019 Source product: TEVA-CODEINE; DIN 00593435; fetched 2026-09-10 Product monograph posted by Health Canada; excerpt for lookup only.
What the Health Canada label says it is for
INDICATIONS AND CLINICAL USE Adults TEVA-LENOLTEC No. 2 and No. 3 (acetaminophen, caffeine and codeine phosphate) are indicated for the short-term relief of mild to moderate pain. Geriatrics (> 65 years of age) In general, dose selection for an elderly patient should be cautious, usually starting at the low end of the dosing range, reflecting the greater frequency of decreased hepatic, renal, or cardiac function, concomitant disease or other drug therapy. Pediatrics (< 18 years of age) There are limited safety and efficacy studies with acetaminophen and codeine in the pediatric population. Therefore, the use of TEVA-LENOLTEC No. 2 and No. 3 are not recommended in patients over 12 and under 18 years of age. Regardless of clinical setting, the use of codeine, including TEVA-LENOLTEC No. 2 and No. 3, is contraindicated in patients below the age of 12 years due to increased safety concerns (see CONTRAINDICATIONS and WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS, Special Populations, Pediatrics). https://pdf.hres.ca/dpd_pm/00065848.PDF PM date: July 15, 2014 Source product: TEVA-LENOLTEC NO. 2; DIN 00653241; fetched 2026-09-10 Product monograph posted by Health Canada; excerpt for lookup only.

INDICATIONS AND CLINICAL USE Adults FIORINAL®-C (acetylsalicylic acid-caffeine-codeine-butalbital) is indicated for the relief of tension-type headache. Evidence supporting the efficacy and safety of FIORINAL®-C in the treatment of multiple recurrent headaches is unavailable. Caution in this regard is required because repeated use of FIORINAL®-C may cause medication overuse headaches and codeine and butalbital are habit- forming and potentially abusable (see WARNINGS and PRECAUTIONS, Dependence/Tolerance). 1 Indications CODEINE CONTIN (codeine controlled release tablets) is indicated for the relief of mild to moderate pain in adults requiring the prolonged use of an opioid analgesic preparation. CODEINE CONTIN is not indicated as an as-needed (prn) analgesic. 1.1 Pediatrics Pediatrics (<18 years of age): Regardless of the clinical setting, codeine, including CODEINE CONTIN, should not be used in children below the age of 12 years because of the risk of opioid toxicity due to the variable and unpredictable metabolism of codeine to morphine (see 2 Contraindications; 4 Dosage and Administration; 7.1.3 Pediatrics; 10.3 Pharmacokinetics, Special Populations and Conditions, Pediatrics) CODEINE CONTIN has not been studied in the pediatric population, therefore the use of CODEINE CONTIN is not recommended in patients over 12 and under 18 years of age (see 2 Contraindications). 1.2 Geriatrics Geriatrics (>65 years of age): Evidence from clinical studies and experience suggests that use in the geriatric population is associated with differences in safety or effectiveness. Compassionate Review Policy: source quote
Where there are rare clinical circumstances in immediately life, limb, or organ-threatening conditions, the Executive Officer will also consider requests for drugs or indications in situations where there has not been a decision by the Executive Officer to provide funding of the drug or indication as part of the Ontario Drug Benefit program (and the EAP), and the drug or indication requested would not circumvent the established review process for new drugs or indications as part of the drug submission process for listing within the Ontario Drug Benefit program. Requests must meet the criteria for the Compassionate Review Policy.

For cancer drugs, Case-by-Case Review considers rare, immediately life-threatening circumstances when no satisfactory funded treatment exists; its criteria and application process apply. Case-by-Case Review (cancer drugs)

Case-by-Case Review (cancer drugs): source quote
Note: Requests for cancer drugs are considered under the Case-by-Case Review Program (CBCRP) which is administered by Ontario Health (Cancer Care Ontario) on behalf of the Ministry of Health. The CBCRP considers funding requests for drugs (both oral therapies and injectable drugs) for the treatment of cancer in patients who have a rare clinical circumstance that is immediately life-threatening (death is likely within a matter of months) and who require treatment with an unfunded drug, because there is no other satisfactory and funded treatment. Please refer to the Ontario Health website for information on the application process, FAQs, eligibility criteria and program policies.
