1 INDICATIONS Novolin®ge (Insulin, Human Biosynthetic) is indicated for: • The treatment of patients with diabetes mellitus who require insulin for the control of hyperglycemia. When administered in appropriate regular doses to patients with diabetes mellitus and who follow a controlled diet and exercise program, Novolin®ge (Insulin, Human Biosynthetic) temporarily restores their ability to metabolize carbohydrates, protein and fats. The Novolin®ge formulations differ with respect to onset, peak and duration of action. These times reflect averages and can vary depending upon the individual patient. The standard time action characteristics are as follows: Novolin®ge Toronto (Insulin Injection, Human Biosynthetic) is a water-clear, colourless, neutral solution of human insulin with a short duration of action. The effect of Novolin®ge Toronto after subcutaneous administration begins after approximately ½ hour, is maximal between 2 ½ and 5 hours and terminates after approximately 8 hours. Novolin®ge NPH (Insulin Isophane, Human Biosynthetic) is a cloudy, neutral suspension of human isophane insulin with an intermediate duration of action. INDICATIONS AND CLINICAL USE HUMULIN (insulin, human biosynthetic) is indicated for the treatment of insulin requiring diabetic patients. HUMULIN-R only should be used for the treatment of emergencies such as diabetic coma and pre-coma and in diabetics undergoing surgery, but not HUMULIN-N, or HUMULIN MIXTURES. In switching patients from animal source insulins to HUMULIN, it is possible that the patients will require a change in dosage; the adjustment may be made with the first dose or over a period of several weeks. Any change of insulin should be made cautiously and only under medical supervision. Changes in refinement, purity, strength, brand, type and/or method of manufacture (recombinant DNA versus animal source insulin) may result in the need for a change in dosage.
