What the Health Canada label says it is for
1 INDICATIONS Treatment DIFLUCAN (fluconazole) is indicated for the treatment of: 1. Oropharyngeal and esophageal candidiasis. DIFLUCAN is also effective for the treatment of serious systemic candidal infections, including urinary tract infection, peritonitis, and pneumonia. 2. Cryptococcal meningitis. 3. Prevention of the recurrence of cryptococcal meningitis in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Specimens for fungal culture and other relevant laboratory studies (serology, histopathology) should be obtained prior to therapy to isolate and identify causative organisms. Therapy may be instituted before the results of the cultures and other laboratory studies are known; however, once these results become available, anti-infective therapy should be adjusted accordingly. Note: Requests for cancer drugs are considered under the Case-by-Case Review Program (CBCRP) which is administered by Ontario Health (Cancer Care Ontario) on behalf of the Ministry of Health. The CBCRP considers funding requests for drugs (both oral therapies and injectable drugs) for the treatment of cancer in patients who have a rare clinical circumstance that is immediately life-threatening (death is likely within a matter of months) and who require treatment with an unfunded drug, because there is no other satisfactory and funded treatment.
