What the Health Canada label says it is for
1 INDICATIONS DIOVAN® (valsartan tablets) is indicated for: • Hypertension o For the treatment of mild to moderate essential hypertension. o DIOVAN may be administered alone, or concomitantly with thiazide diuretics. o The safety and efficacy of concurrent treatment with DIOVAN and angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors have not been established. • Following Myocardial Infarction o To reduce cardiovascular mortality in clinically stable patients with signs or symptoms of left ventricular dysfunction in conjunction with acute myocardial infarction when the use of an angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor (ACEI) is not appropriate. o The combination of valsartan and an angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor (ACEI) has not been shown to result in clinically relevant improvement in cardiovascular outcome over valsartan use alone. Note: Requests for cancer drugs are considered under the Case-by-Case Review Program (CBCRP) which is administered by Ontario Health (Cancer Care Ontario) on behalf of the Ministry of Health. The CBCRP considers funding requests for drugs (both oral therapies and injectable drugs) for the treatment of cancer in patients who have a rare clinical circumstance that is immediately life-threatening (death is likely within a matter of months) and who require treatment with an unfunded drug, because there is no other satisfactory and funded treatment.
