The Executive Officer's funding of drug products is informed by advice from experts that consider evidence regarding the safety, clinical efficacy, and cost-effectiveness of drug products. What the Health Canada label says it is for
INDICATIONS AND CLINICAL USE Hypertension APO-CAPTO (captopril) is indicated for the treatment of essential or renovascular hypertension. It is usually administered in association with other drugs, particularly thiazide diuretics. The blood pressure lowering effects of captopril and thiazides are approximately additive. In using APO-CAPTO, consideration should be given to the risk of neutropenia/agranulocytosis (see WARNINGS). a) In patients with normal renal function. APO-CAPTO should normally be used in those patients in whom treatment with diuretics or beta-blockers was found ineffective or has been associated with unacceptable adverse effects. APO-CAPTO can be tried as an initial agent in those patients with severe hypertension or in those in whom the use of diuretics and/or beta-blockers is contraindicated or in patients with medical conditions in which those drugs frequently cause serious adverse effects. b) In patients with impaired renal function. Note: Requests for cancer drugs are considered under the Case-by-Case Review Program (CBCRP) which is administered by Ontario Health (Cancer Care Ontario) on behalf of the Ministry of Health. The CBCRP considers funding requests for drugs (both oral therapies and injectable drugs) for the treatment of cancer in patients who have a rare clinical circumstance that is immediately life-threatening (death is likely within a matter of months) and who require treatment with an unfunded drug, because there is no other satisfactory and funded treatment.
