What the Health Canada label says it is for
1. Indications Pr VOLTAREN RAPIDE® (diclofenac potassium) is indicated for: • the short-term (up to one week) treatment of acute, mild to moderately severe pain that may be accompanied by inflammation, in conditions such as: musculoskeletal and/or soft tissue trauma including sprains, post-operative pain following dental extraction, episiotomy, or dysmenorrhea. Throughout this document, the term Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug (NSAID) refers to both non-selective NSAIDs and selective COX-2 inhibitor NSAIDs, unless otherwise indicated. Diclofenac, particularly at higher doses, is associated with an increased risk of serious cardiovascular related adverse events that is comparable to COX-2 inhibitors. For patients with pre-existing risk factors for cardiovascular disease (including ischemic heart disease, cerebrovascular disease and/or congestive heart failure NYHA II-IV), other management strategies that do not include NSAIDs, particularly COX-2 inhibitors and diclofenac, should be considered first (see 2 Contraindications and 7 Warnings and Precautions). Note: Requests for cancer drugs are considered under the Case-by-Case Review Program (CBCRP) which is administered by Ontario Health (Cancer Care Ontario) on behalf of the Ministry of Health. The CBCRP considers funding requests for drugs (both oral therapies and injectable drugs) for the treatment of cancer in patients who have a rare clinical circumstance that is immediately life-threatening (death is likely within a matter of months) and who require treatment with an unfunded drug, because there is no other satisfactory and funded treatment.
