What the Health Canada label says it is for
1. Indications Epilepsy: Adults (> 18 years of age) TEGRETOL® (carbamazepine) is indicated for use as an anticonvulsant drug either alone or in combination with other anticonvulsant drugs. Carbamazepine is not effective in controlling absence, myoclonic or atonic seizures, and does not prevent the generalization of epileptic discharge. Moreover, exacerbation of seizures may occasionally occur in patients with atypical absences. Trigeminal Neuralgia: Adults (> 18 years of age) TEGRETOL is indicated for the symptomatic relief of pain of trigeminal neuralgia only during periods of exacerbation of true or primary trigeminal neuralgia (tic douloureux). It should not be used preventively during periods of remission. In some patients, TEGRETOL has relieved glossopharyngeal neuralgia. For patients who fail to respond to TEGRETOL, or who are sensitive to the drug, recourse to other accepted measures must be considered. Carbamazepine is not a simple analgesic and should not be used to relieve trivial facial pains or headaches. Treatment of Acute Mania and Prophylaxis in Bipolar (Manic-Depressive) Disorders: Adults (> 18 years of age) TEGRETOL may be used… https://pdf.hres.ca/dpd_pm/00085662.PDF PM date: 2026-07-31 Source product: TEGRETOL; DIN 00010405; fetched 2026-09-10 Product monograph posted by Health Canada; excerpt for lookup only.
